An extremely rare and unusual Arabian tetradrachm
Lot 1103
ARABIA, Northwestern. Mid 5th to 4th centuries BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25 mm, 16.54 g, 9 h). Head of Athena to right, wearing crested Attic helmet decorated with three olive leaves and palmette. Rev. AΘE Owl standing right, head facing; to left, olive sprig and crescent; all within incuse square. HGC 10 -. Huth -. Extremely rare. A larger test cut on the obverse and a tiny one on the reverse, otherwise, very fine.

From the collection of a Cosmopolitan, acquired before 2005.

Stylistically, this impressive piece most resembles coins from northwestern Arabia, though no direct comparisons are known. The design of the eye, nose, and mouth recalls the Athena on Huth 1, but that coin imitates an early Athenian issue, while ours is based on a classical prototype.
